What Can You Do to Ask Better Questions?

Have you ever felt like you don’t have enough good questions to ask? A key superpower we have as brand strategists is our ability to ask questions. Even though it sounds easy and simple, sometimes it can be challenging when the people we are talking to come from industries that are completely foreign to us.

Victor, a Bootcamper, shared that one of the things he does regularly is to attend conferences about “random” things—like a conference for magicians or comic exhibitions. Victor doesn’t hope to become a magician or to start writing comic books. His goal is to learn the language of different people from different backgrounds in order to ask better questions. What a fun idea, right? I would’ve never thought of attending such events for myself.

And then for Levina, another Bootcamper who is a writer, she purposely spends time to study a little bit of design over the years. When I asked her why, she said she wanted to learn how designers see things. It wasn’t about switching focus into designing. Because she works with many creatives who are designers, she wanted to understand a designer’s point of view.

I love what Victor and Levina did because what if asking better questions starts with our intentionality to understand where the other person is coming from? Learning their language, their passion, and their perspectives about the world.

Cheers!

Melinda
